All On 4 Dental Implants

All On 4 Dental Implants Sunset Hills, MO

Recent advancements in cosmetic dentistry have made it possible for patients to receive an entire arch of teeth (top or bottom) with just four dental implants. This implant procedure is referred to as All-on-4. At St. Louis Prosthodontics, Dr. Joseph F. Shea, DDS, MS, creates custom-designed, All-on-4 treatment plans to provide his patients with the smile they have always wanted.

The All-on-4 Dental Implant Option

When dental implants first emerged, people who were replacing an entire arch of teeth required a dental implant and crown for each missing tooth, which is why the ability to reduce the number of dental implants and single crowns required to replace an entire arch of teeth is an exciting advancement. Placing fewer implants means a faster procedure and a quicker recovery for the patient.

The Dental Implant Difference

Dental implants are highly desirable because they are the only solution for missing teeth that provides patients with the same look and feel as their natural teeth. Furthermore, dental implants that consist of titanium can fuse with the jawbone. The fusion process takes from four to six months and is referred to as osseointegration.

There are Three Types of Dental Implants

It is the characteristics of the patient’s jawbone that determine which implant Dr. Shea chooses.

  1. Endosteal implants – this is the implant that is used most frequently. Endosteal implants are used when the patient has enough strong, healthy bone for the fusion process.
  2. Subperiosteal implants – this implant is designed for people whose bone structure has deteriorated as well as for individuals who feel uncomfortable about having implants inserted into their jawbone. When these implants are used, they are inserted deep into the gingival tissue (aka gum tissue). Instead of bone, the gum tissue holds this implant in place.
  3. Zygomatic implants – these implants are only used when a patient lacks the amount of jawbone necessary to have endosteal or subperiosteal implants.

The good news is that even when a patient is not considered a good candidate for any of the implant options listed above, as a highly-skilled prosthodontist with 20 years of experience, Dr. Joseph Shea, DDS, MS, will consider all the procedures available to determine if any of them could help solve the problem that is making the patient an unacceptable candidate for dental implants.
