What Is The Difference Between A Veneer And A Crown?

Posted on 11/15/2023 by Andrew Admin
Veneers and crowns are related by the fact that some of the goals set by patients are similar after the processes. This is in the sense that they serve the same purpose in some teeth conditions. Some crowns are also made from the same substance as some veneers. Even though crowns and veneers can serve similar purposes, there are outstanding differences you should be aware of regarding these two restorations.

Dental Veneers

Veneers are used to get back the teeth to a more normal state or give them a better look in case they are weary, discolored, or even crooked. A dentist may use veneers to rectify problems like discolorations, chippings, cracks, breaks, and fractures.

The two materials mainly used to make veneers are porcelain and composite resin. Porcelain is also used to make dental crowns. It is also the strongest of the two. Porcelain veneers last longer than composite resin ones, and are also anti-wear and anti-tear. They are attached to the front surface of the teeth by the use of an adhesive. The teeth' enamel is scrubbed off to make it rough because this is what supports the strength of the bond between the teeth, adhesive, and veneer.

Dental Crowns

These can be made from different materials including porcelain, a fusion of porcelain with metal alloys, or just a metal alloy. Crowns cover the entire tooth surface, unlike veneers that cover only the front teeth.

Teeth have to be filed down or those with cracks have to be filled first before the crowns are placed. For decaying teeth, they have to be treated first and filled again. Crowns last longer than veneers, and can even serve you a lifetime. Aesthetically, crowns are not as pleasing as veneers because of their thickness and how they cover teeth' surface.

The performance of each of them is also determined by the dentist. We have experienced and qualified experts who will attend to your dental needs. Contact us.
