I Need Dentures, How Do I Go About It?

Posted on 11/1/2023 by Andrew Admin
There are many options for replacing teeth and one of them is dentures. These fixed or removable oral appliances work to replace missing teeth. Dentures come in different types including partials, full, and implant-supported. They are fabricated from materials like acrylic, nylon, resin, porcelain, or metal. If you are seeking to get dentures, here are a couple of things you need to know.

Types of Dentures

A dentist may utilize dentures to replace one, some, or all of your teeth. Complete dentures are the ones used to replace all the teeth. These dentures rest on your gums. A dentist may improve the retention and stability of these dentures by utilizing dental implants to mount them. Implant-supported dentures remove the challenges that come with conventional dentures such as moving around or loose dentures.

Further, dentures that work to replace some teeth are known as partials. A dentist attaches these dentures to the present teeth. They rest and cover the gums and bones in the areas where the missing teeth were before. A dentist may also choose to place dental implants to enhance the stability and retention of partial dentures.

How to Go About Getting Dentures

The starting point for receiving dentures is to see a prosthodontist. This dental professional has the required knowledge and training in the placement of dentures. A prosthodontist receives three additional years of training once they have completed their dental school training. The extra years of training focus on the replacement and restoration of teeth, including denture placement or even dental implant placement.

When you visit a prosthodontist, you will know if dentures are a choice for you or if you require an alternative treatment option. Some people are not considered candidates for dentures. The prosthodontist will do a thorough inspection and examination of the mouth and teeth. If there are issues that could make you not a good fit for dentures, the dental specialist will explain that to you and provide the options available.
