Can Bad Fitting Dentures Cause Canker Sores?

Posted on 4/1/2024 by Weo Admin
Elderly woman enjoying her new smileCanker sores are those small, shallow ulcers that tend to show up on the soft tissues inside your mouth or where your gums start. You are highly likely to develop canker sores immediately after wearing your dentures for the first time. Canker sores can also develop when dentures fit poorly, get old, or are damaged. The sores are a direct result of the dentures irritating the gums.

How Do You Know That Your Dentures Are Ill-Fitting?

There are different ways to tell that your dentures are ill-fitting. First, ill-fitting dentures are loose. Poorly fitting dentures also remain uncomfortable even after wearing them long. They are ill-fitting if you also need a thick layer of denture glue to keep your dentures in place.

Perfectly-fitting dentures do not need a thick layer of dental glue. You only need a slight saliva coating to have perfectly fitting dentures in their rightful place. If you must use any adhesive to keep your dentures in place, you will need a tiny amount.

What To Do When You Have Ill-Fitting Dentures

Getting dentures as a replacement for missing teeth is an elaborate procedure, and your dentist works hard to ensure that your dentures are the perfect measure of your mouth. Ill-fitting dentures not only cause canker sores but also make them uncomfortable.

The mouth and gums constantly change, eventually making your dentures small or too big. One of those changes can occur when you lose or add weight. When these changes occur, your dentures fit improperly, and you risk getting canker sores.

The solution to ill-fitting dentures is to bring them to your dentist for adjustments and possible repairs. Some of these adjustments can take only a day. However, do not try to adjust your dentures at home. Your do-it-yourself approach is admirable, but you could damage your dentures and cause more oral problems than you previously had.

Closing Remarks

Your dentist will use a clinical approach to treat any sores caused by ill-fitting dentures. The most permanent solution is adjusting and repairing dentures to ensure they fit perfectly. Contact us today and learn how you can permanently deal with denture sores once and for all.
