Can a Prosthodontist Fix a Cavity Without Drilling?
Posted on 8/1/2024 by St. Louis Prosthodontics
Prosthodontists can fix some cavities without drilling. Recently, there has been a significant shift toward non-invasive dentistry due to technological advancements. Family prosthodontists, in particular, have adopted these gentle, drill-free cavity treatments. Some of the ways to treat cavities without being invasive include:
Fluoride Treatments
One of the least invasive methods for early-stage cavities is fluoride treatment. Fluoride, a natural mineral, strengthens tooth enamel and reverses early decay. In this procedure, the prosthodontist applies a concentrated fluoride solution to the affected tooth, promoting remineralization and stopping cavity growth.
Dental Sealants for Cavity Treatment
Another option used by prosthodontists is dental sealants. These are thin, plastic coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of molars and premolars. Sealants act as barriers, preventing bacteria and food particles from accumulating in the deep grooves and fissures of the teeth. By sealing off these vulnerable areas, sealants reduce the growth of cavities without the need for drilling.
Air Abrasion Cavity Treatment
Air abrasion is a treatment technique that uses abrasive particles, like baking soda, to correct tooth decay. The prosthodontist precisely directs the abrasive stream at the decayed area, removing compromised enamel. After decay removal, the tooth can be restored with a filling material like composite resin.
Micro-invasive Therapy
This therapy includes resin infiltration to treat early stages of cavities without being invasive. Resin infiltration uses a resin material to fill the pores or the enamel, stopping cavity progression. This technique is especially effective for incipient or white spot lesions.
Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF Treatment)
Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is a popular non-invasive treatment for cavities, especially in children. SDF treatment employs silver ions with antibacterial properties and fluoride that promotes remineralization. When applied to cavities, SDF halts decay, preventing further tooth damage.
