Can I Brush My Teeth After Inlays?

Posted on 8/15/2024 by St. Louis Prosthodontics
Woman brushing teeth before appointment at St. Louis Prosthodontics in St. Louis, MOIt would help to not brush your teeth immediately after getting an inlay. Usually, you may experience some soreness. Sometimes, there might also be minor swelling on the gums. You do not have to brush during these early stages. The soreness will subside after two to three days, and you may proceed with regular dental brushing. With that said, many factors must be observed when caring for your teeth post-dental inlays procedure. Here are some tips to keep in mind.

Care Immediately Post-Inlay Procedure

For the first three days, avoid consuming foods and drinks with extreme temperatures, such as hot coffee or ice cream. Such foods can cause discomfort and pain. Expect tooth sensitivity, which is a common occurrence after a dental procedure. Additionally, it is essential to avoid hard or sticky substances like gums and candies. These foods can dislodge or damage the inlay and necessitate repairs. During these early days, you may use a mouthwash to rinse your mouth.

Care For Inlays After a Week

After the first week, the soreness and swelling around your gums should subside. At this stage, you need to resume regular dental hygiene. Maintaining good oral hygiene is also vital for proper healing. While it may be tempting to avoid brushing and flossing due to concerns about pain or discomfort, returning to everyday habits is essential once the swelling subsides. Brushing and flossing regularly will help prevent bacteria buildup and promote proper healing.

How to Maintain Your Dental Health Post-Inlay

Regular dental visits are also crucial for maintaining overall oral health. Just because you have received a dental inlay does not mean you are immune to dental problems. Regular check-ups with your dentist will help detect any warning signs of decay or damage, allowing for prompt treatment and prevention of future issues.

By following these simple aftercare tips, you can ensure a smooth and comfortable recovery from your dental inlay procedure. You can call us to talk to an expert about your concerns regarding the management of inlays.
